Hmm...it's hard to describe. The short version is that we *sound* a little bit like Fountains of Wayne, except our songs are usually about something. Other bands that come to mind (and have come up in conversations with audience members) have been the Hi-Fives and The Pixies. The longer version: it's a mix of different musical styles and tastes. By member... 1. Me - I listen to almost all punk and ska, and I try to instill a lot of the energy that those forms of music have into the bass. That means departing from just playing along with the guitar at least half the time, and when I do play the same chords, it's usually with some unconventional "something". 2. Chris (lead guitarist) - he learned to play guitar by playing mostly rock (a la U2, Beatles, etc.) and blues (???), so the leads tend to have an active, but slightly more usual sound than the bass. Chris, however, has generally good taste and has been playing for 10 years, so it's good. 3. Ben (rhythm guitar) - sort of halfway between my refusal to be conventional and Chris's refusal to be radically convetional. He sounds sort of like folk sometimes, but cut his teeth mostly on "alternative", but long before it got that name. He and I share music once in a while, as does he and Chris, but he doesn't sound any *one* way. 4. Scott (drummer) - Scott learned to play drums by playing almost all jazz. Yeah. He's an *excellent* drummer, and he's been playing for 14 years. Scott doesn't write songs, but the drums are very active and, well, jazzy. He's the most proficient of all of us at his instrument; during practices, he plays the hihat (just that one cymbal for space reasons - just to lay down a beat) with one hand and reads my magazines at the same time. Given that, "our sound" is more dependent on who wrote which song. My songs have a very rocking, big noise feel; Ben's are very melodic and fluid; Chris's are jaunty and flippant. Damn, that's probably way more information than you wanted. If you got bored reading it all, then I'm sorry. Okay, first of all - you don't have to pay the same company every time you buy a record, because no one patented vinyl. Secondly, records sound fuller. A CD is simply replaying the same noises programmed into it. CDs have no sound of their own, it's just mimicry. For a car - CDs still suck because they skip all the time and a CD unit in a car is fucking expensive. Tapes for there. Besides, why pay attention to a car anyway? I can handle a record without fucking surgical gloves, and I can leave it on the turntable without worrying about dust. Simple, because my other choices aren't worth anything. I also support a monopoly every time I go to the gas station, turn on a light bulb, throw a pizza in the oven or a multitudeof other things. I don't happily support any of those monopolies, but neither do I want to do without those products and services. L> you buy a CD. Besides, what do you mean "improve"? You mean like when Lenin L> "improved" communism? When CocaCola "improves" their flavors? How the Dust I mean improve, in terms of the quality of the music and the versatility of the format. Unlike tapes and records, Cds can be used for games and movies and cd-g music and regular old music Cds, all printed for a few pennies and all exactly alike. To me, those are posotive things, vast improvements over tapes and records. The fact that we all get raped by the record companies over the price has nothing to do with the format itself, which is an improvement over analog magnetic technology like tapes. L> Where are you getting "distortion" from? Records don't sound "distorted" L> or muffled, or anything. They just sound like they have more of a purpose, L> more of a musical quality to them. To me, they sound distorted. Like someone took a CD, and recorded it for a friend. To me, this serves no purpose ... if it does for you, great. So be it. Many of which don't have a decent signal in my area, and the ones that do still play a lot of crap. I've never been a big fan of music radio, no matter the station or format. The whole concept of listening to 10 songs I don't like, one song I do, interspersed by commercials and annoying announcers has never made sense to me. L> L> You can't get 45s in CDs, DR> DR> Huh? It wasn't the concept that was confusing, it was the way you said it. Not sure if you know this or not, but yes - there are little CDs too, but they've never become very popular and are hard to find. Yep, because they're more expensive out of the box it makes sense that they're more expensive when you sell & buy them used. And when a music format goes out of style, it also makes sense that it will become less expensive to pick 'em up used .... but if price is the only factor, you'd probably find 8-tracks cheaper than anything else out there. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: LITTLE NIRO To: Trash Subject: Re: All men are gay? Actually, it's 6 tracks, so it's more of an EP. Actually, it's tape-only, so maybe it is* a demo; whatever, it's my "thing". Anyhoo, I'm making as much as I need. The tapes cost about 80 cents each at the bookstore, plus a dime to make the copy of the tape-insert, and I'm selling them for $3 each, so I can pretty easily make back whatever production cost there is. Luckily though, there's no way for me to get rich, which would make me feel like a shill. Mine's mostly instrumentals. There are two tracks with vocals, one that's a sort of fuck you/existentialist rant, and another that's very simple and quiet about my parents' divorce. Especially if they can't play or sing and their songs suck? Because they're "HARD"? Why don't I just go listen to a construction site if all I want is "hard"? I like MUSIC, OK? If a song works*, it works*...doesn't matter what bullshit category you, the magazines, the 'zines, the "rock critics" the stores or especially goddamn MTV puts it in. Most of these "hard" bands play like crap, sound like crap and are crap - just like everything else. And it's been done to death for decades by self styled rebels and suburban anarchists who end up in lousy metal bands or as fast food managers... I'm SICK of kids like you with your STUPID facist take one what music is and isn't and what it CAN or CAN'T BE - you're SO underground, you're so incredibly radical* - you've rejected society! No one ever listened to punk or wore eighteen-hole Docs before you geniuses came by - "Punk", or whatever it is, or WAS, *wasn't* about division - it was about *inclusion* - people, styles... *ATTITUDES* - maybe punk as an ideal* lasted about three or four weeks - but people like YOU have to smother it and grasp it to your own limited needs to establish an identity for your sad little lives... That said, there are a few things that I think went unsaid there... I don't especially like pop music. That, however, is a MUSICAL STYLE, wheras "punk", whatever the FUCK that means these days, is more of a SPIRIT. I've thought a lot about this given my recent ejection from the band, so bear with me. "Punk rock" is rock n' roll, or if nothing else, music*, made by people who have the punk spirit. I believe this is so because there are other things that involve punk ideals - Evan Dorkin's comics, for instance. He's not in a band, and a lot of the writers for 'zines aren't either. So by the definition of "punk = punk rock", those people aren't "punk" at all, but in fact most of them are obviously more "punk" than hacks like Pennywise or Screeching Weasel. I like bands for different reasons, but it usually boils down to two things: 1. I like them for what they're about (e.g. Deadguy, Fluffy, Drive Like Jehu [!], Rocket from the Crypt, Dead Kennedys, Fugazi, ad infinitum) 2. I like them for the music they make (e.g. Morphine, Peter Gabriel, RFTC [!], Drive Like Jehu, Fugazi, Dead Kennedys, etc.) There's clearly some overlap, and that for me is what defines a great "punk band" - when I like what they're about, and the music they make. So you take your* narrow-minded, short-sighted, punker-than-thou mindless balls-ass ridiculous views and shove them up your tight asshole, you unsmiling prick zealot. Your extremism is as fervent as Ralph Reed's Christian views, and it's extremists like you that drive people apart and destroy any feeling of community that anyone ever tries to get. When I watched it on the news the news fucker was insinuating that it was gonna get shut down, but hey, I am kinda slow so dont take my word for it. On the news they also said that the bombshelter was a "underground alternative club" I got a kick out of that one. Anyway on a lighter note I got called a poser yesterday but a fucking drunken jock. He insisted Malcom McClaren was the originator of punk, or the "godfather" as he put it. Yah I says, whats so punk about some asshole that put together bands and made lots of money off it? Jocks are so stoopid. They think Sex Pistols are the only fucking punk band that ever hit this earth. (All this came from a fucker who gets his music from comp tapes they hand out at bars).. I'm guessing the reason it's being shut down is because they were doing something illegal in the first place in the place. On the news I heard it was an "Illegal Night Club". Well there were probly a bunch of underage kids with beer down there, and maybe they can get fucked up because they are charging money to get it (even if it is like 2 or 3 bux) without some sort of license. I find talking to people lame, because they don't know anything about philosophy or psychology, or music and so there's nothing to talk to them about. I'm more than content just having J.
