I have no idea FE> she was able to contact a spirit... I am not a real strong beleiver in that FE> anywayz... Then give an example of where you thought that Hilary was "lying to the press." This is the only time I have seen her talking to the press at all, lately, and you made the accusation. What I heard Hilary saying to the press was to dispel the idea that she was actually contacting spirits. Admittedly, there is a lot of mysticism about the White House, including rumors that Lincoln roams tha halls at times. But this is not what Hilary was claiming. She was more in the sense of talking to the history of Eleanor Roosevelt that is contained in that house. It is reasonable that she would associate with Eleanor Roosevelt. They had a lot in common, philosophically, politically, and even professionally, because Eleanor was the first first lady who went out and worked in tha world as a working partner to her husband, who was in a wheel chair. She also made a public point of setting a role model for women who had to go out and work as "Rosie the riveter" to support the war effort, but caught a lot of heat from people who thought that women should stay in the home. There is a very great difference in "getting in the spirit" and "talking to the spirit" of Eleanor Roosevelt, and since Hilary is a devout Methodist, I doubt that she was talking to spirits. The real mean spirits here are people who are looking for any reason to demean the Clintons no matter what it takes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: DAVE THE LUCKY To: Froggy Subject: Re: nixon? I don't know TI> much about it, but have heard that it will be really revolutionary. Hope you don't mind if the king of useless knowledge chimes in with an answer... Basically, the BeOS rocks. It was designed from the ground up by a former Apple technology chief and forms the backbone of his company, Be, Inc. To get an idea of how slick and stable the OS is, listen to the guys at MacUser: "It's amazing to see a BeOS system simultaneously play multiple QuickTime movies and an audio file, serve and browse Web pages, and render 3-D animation, all in real time." I couldn't highlight the "and"s in that statement, so you may have missed the implication that all of this is going on simultaneously. Advantages of the BeOS: Speed--the BeOS was designed for PowerPC chips, and it uses the full capabilities of the new chip architecture. In addition, other advances improve speed in specific instances; for example, file data is stored in a system database. Querying the database is lightning-quick; no more two-minute long waits for "Find File" to check every nook and cranny of your local drives! You can copy files simultaneously, or copy files in the background while running an application. You can do all this because the BeOS supports true preemptive multitasking, unlike System 7s current "cooperative multitasking". Stability--the BeOS uses a strict protected memory system, so that if a program attempts to write into memory reserved by another application (or by the system), only the offending program is shut down. It's supposed to be next to impossible to crash the BeOS. Disadvantages of the BeOS: -Interface is window and "dock" based, not icon based. Longtime Mac users might have trouble adapting. (Then again, a "docking" app for the Mac, DragThing, is my favorite accessory; I don't think I'd have trouble switching.) -BeOS doesn't support printing, yet. -BeOS doesn't have color management (like ColorSync), yet. -BeOS doesn't have on-line help (like AppleGuide), yet. -BeOS only supports TrueType fonts. (PostScript type 1 is said to be a priority.) The reason I say "yet" after most of the disadvantages is that all of them could be solved if Apple would port its applets, like ColorSync and its various printer drivers, over to the BeOS. This would require a partnership between Apple and Be that hasn't been announced yet. The advantages for Be, Inc. are obvious--it's OS could run on any PowerPC Mac. The advantages for Apple are more nebulous, but the big one is that Apple's long-awaited System 8 (a.k.a.: Copland) which was supposed to electrify Apple and turn the world to Mac has now been thrown into the trash; Apple has cancelled plans to release System 8 (or any other major upgrades), and will just release minor improvements to System 7 for the forseeable future. Combining the BeOS with the best of the MacOS could kick-start Apple's OS plans again and keep the Mac on top of the high-performance application market (graphics and Web authorship and service). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: BIG TEEBO To: Dave The Lucky Subject: Re: the BeOS Date: Thu Jan 09 12:08:29 CST 1997 Message number: 65 Reply to message number: 64 DT> animation, all in real time." Yep, I was really into BBSing when I got my first modem. Called every single board I could get a number for, always looking for something better at little or no cost. Then one day I dialed up a guest account on a provider called Winternet and got seriously hooked. Left BBSing altogether for about 3 years and just lived on the net. Got into programing virtual worlds for places called MUSHes (sorts like MUDs if you know anything about them) and that helped me learn the basics so now I'm trying to learn higher and lower level languages like C and Assembly. And yes, Unix is the greatest. Although there are definatly advantages to graphical interfaces, the feeling of power you get sitting in front of a command-line unix shell can't be matched by any little happy icons. TI> I definitely identify with thata little snippet. My keyboard is TI> really cheap, and really bad. To get it to work I have to constantly plug TI> and unplug it. It's no fun. Yeah, I lived on a terrible keyboard for 6 years. Thing didn't even have a control or escape key on it. Never again... TI> So yer a Mac hacker eh? Have you taken a look at any of the mac TI> unixes (mainly linux). Also, can you talk a bit 'bout Be OS? I don't know TI> much about it, but have heard that it will be really revolutionary. Ah, yeah, I guess you could call me a Mac hacker (although hacking on a Mac really isn't anything impressive at all, too much point & click to really get any sort of hacking 'feel') but I'm a lot more interested in Unix systems when it comes to that area. Right now for the Mac there is MachTen, the premeire commercial unix system for your mac. I've tried it out before and it appears to work very well and I would say even probably helps out the mac in a lot of ways. Then there's eXodus and MacLinux, which is only available on CD right now for developers and needs a PowerMac to run, but looks just beautiful. When they put out a release version of it I'm standing in line for a copy. (You can get the development CD right now for something like $30 BTW) As for Be OS, it's just sweet. Plain & simple. A complete recode from the ground up. Not like the Mac & Windows where the thing has been patched & modified since it was first made. Be is made to be run by today's computer and use them to the fullest using all the latest programming techniques. Never crashes, ever move a window that had things running in it and as you dragged it everything in the window kept running perfectly? That's Be OS. It's has it's faults still, but I'd get it as a second system if I could in a second. Whew. Hopefully there will be good apps made for this, otherwise BeOS won't work too well, it seems the best things are never embraced :( . But isn't Be going to create the BeBox, their own type of 'puter? DT> Speed--the BeOS was designed for PowerPC chips, and it uses the full DT> capabilities of the new chip architecture. In addition, other advances BT> Yep, wasn't it also designed to be able to handle multiple chips as well to BT> increase performance? Somewhat. The current BeOS supports two processors, and Be, Inc's proprietary machine (which they call the BeBox) has two PowerPC processors (I'm assuming 603e chips, since the article I read didn't say which chips are used). Also, Be, Inc. has cut a deal with Power Computing to provide the BeOS with all new PowerTower machines. Many of the PowerTower Mac clones are already superior to Apple's Macs; with this OS running on them, they'll be unreal. BT> What is "dock based"? Does it come with user-input shell? I can't stand g BT> I need to be as close to the guts of the machine as much as possible.. You'd be disappointed, Teebo. (I imagine if you were a Machead, you'd be a whiz with ResEdit.) The interface looks like a hybrid of the regular Mac OS and Windows 95. Because you can't put icons directly on the desktop (only windows go there), you have a "dock" where you can store icons representing applications, files, or folders. If you store folders in the dock, the dock becomes hierarchical. There's a new issue of MacWorld that also addresses the BeOS, but claims to have more info on Apple's plan for interacting with it. I'll post the update once I scrape up the cash for the magazine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: DAVE THE LUCKY To: Sir Andrew Subject: Re: Intro Date: Sat Jan 11 04:22:47 CST 1997 Message number: 71 Reply to message number: 66 SA> More along the lines of "We need part1 to work with part2 & part3 but it st SA> has to mesh with part4. Our ancestors were not stupid, they created and consumed gallon upon gallon of wine and beer for a very good reason. > Now, In 5 ounces of alcohol (straight) how bad is it going to mess you > up? Well, consider that a can of beer is 12 ounces. That beer is no more than 3-6% alcohol, the rest is water and flavoring. It takes a hell of a lot of beer to get to 5 ounces of pure alcohol. Most of the strong liquors out there, like Whiskey and Schnapps, are 40-50% alcohol. I'd imagine a shot glass is about 1-2 ounces ... so again, it takes quite a few shots to get 5 ounces of pure alcohol. With some quick math, it seems that if you'd fill a 12-oz can of beer with whiskey, you'd have about 5 ounces of pure alcohol. That's a lot of whiskey. FE> considered so dangerous when something we all take in (caffeine) is not eve FE> talked about, I continued to ask her if alcohol was really that dangerous FE> compared to something more widly accepted. An ounce of alco FE>would only buzz you (Possibly) I don't see how you can compare the two. For one, alcohol is measured in fluid ounces and caffeine in milligrams. An ounce of caffeine is approximately 143 No-Doz pills. Yeah, I think that would have some negative effects. I don't know anyone that's going to take that much caffeine, unless they're trying to kill themselves, but for many people a fluid ounce of alcohol is probably just going to start to give them a buzz. So you really can't just take an ounce of every kind of drug and say "this one will kill you, but this one will hardly have an effect." Gotta look at what a normal dose is, and for alcohol, downing a 6er of beer or a few shots of hard liqour is gonna get you "fucken fucked up!" Oh, if you were on a high dosage of caffeine you wo FE> probably become very violent. Ok, now back to my real comment. Read it again and fill in what I actually said. You've read one sentence in pieces, and judged it by that, a sentence is supposed to be read all together. One I said very few people develop a caffeine addiction that messes with family, job, etc. Which is true, I haven't actually heard of anyone who has lost their job or their spouse due to a caffeine addiction. And two, very many people have a caffeine addiction, just due to drinking a couple cups of coffee a day. And also, yes I'm sure you would be violent on a high dosage of caffeine. But the ultimate point is, which was the point of my previous message, taken all together, not contradictory at all, is that people don't regularly abuse caffeine and allow it to ruin their lives. Yes, it could be abused, but because it rarely, very rarely is, we don't need to fear its use. And finally, so called "dangerous" drug alchohol, is as dangerous as it is supposed to be because people frequently do abuse it. As many of you have noticed, the number of people BBSing has dropped dramatically. With the users, went the boards themselves. With the 'rise' of the Internet, and its saturation of the media, very few people realize that there is a more inexpensive way to go on-line. They then complain about ISP costs, busy signals, ect. An additional problem is the negative image BBSes seem to have. There are those who think we are a major underground society. When the one BBS out of a thousand makes the news, our image suffers. Many of you, especially those of you who are sysops, are concerned about the possible disappearance of BBSes from the scene altogether. A small group of concerned BBSers is now attempting to solve this problem. The first step in solving this problem is changing the words 'small group' to 'large group'. That is why this ASCII text exists, to ask you to join us. We need volunteers! We do not want your money, please send it to a BBS that needs it. We do, however need people to come to meetings and discuss how we are going to make the BBS something besides a few pages in computer history. We need people to make their friends aware that something other than the Internet exists. We need people to make their friends aware that they should be doing this as well! Between the founders (to be listed at the bottom of this document), several ideas have come up which naturally cost money. Things like buttons, bumper stickers, and the like. These will wait and be funded for when time comes. For now, please contact us and help support the BBS awareness campaign. We are developing a list of boards that new users can call and get a good feeling of BBSing. We want to make this as good of an experience as possible! We will be creating a 'BBS introductory package' where users can be introduced to the world of BBSing. If you are a sysop, we have three main requirements to get on our list of boards to call... 1: There can be no charge for access to additional services. You can charge for more time and access to more lines, but that is it. We are promoting this as a free alternative to netsurfing after all! 2: You must have an acceptable way of verification if you have adult material on your board. 3: No pirate boards allowed. That's it. As a sysop, expect many questions from new users, and the same goes for cosysops, users, ect... We will all need a great deal of patience here. We may be bringing in people who did not even know a modem was needed to go on-line. This is going to mean additional effort to avoid things like flame wars, ect. Again, I can not emphasize this enough, patience is KEY, many questions will be asked, and we need to strive to make the new users feel comfortable. Right now, we are dealing only with 612 area code BBSes. If you are a BBS in this area, please e-mail me, Coren/Brandan Yares or one of the other founders listed below at Warlock's Castle: 612-588-2024 or 612-588-2799. A group of users has recently decided to help solve this problem. Our first and foremost action is to get more users to join us, the BBS Awareness Campaign. Naturally, this is where YOU come in. :) Many people do not realize that there is an alternative to the Internet. Our goal is to inform these people that there is an entirely different area of cyberspace for them to explore, one that is much safer for them and their children. So far, we have had three meetings, and we have created a number of teams for the following projects: 1: A BBS Network, Awarenet, for communication between local BBSes (local for now) discussing various topics dealing with BBS Awareness. 2: A New User Diskette. We have several programmers (myself included) who are in the process of creating an easy-to-use diskette for new BBSers. Any suggestions will be welcomed! 3: Set up a web page (it's up, but not yet finished), so that I-net folk can be introduced into the BBS medium. 4: Local advertising, get the people around us educated! We do not want your money! We desperately need your time and effort. Our teams are in desperate need of volunteers! Once the first three projects have been completed, the following steps will be immediately undertaken. 1: Bring new users into the worlds of BBSes (by any means deemed feasible)! 2: Educate new users so they can find their way around. The start- up diskette and the web page will help out with this (the start-up diskette's BBS primer will be in a format that could be duplicated on a BBS). 3: Improve the image of BBSes in general. This means no pirate boards, as well as an acceptable means of age verification for adult material (if applicable). If this letter even MILDLY sparks your interest, please contact one of the people below for more information, or e-mail bbs_awareness@juno.com. -Brandan Yares (Coren) Alias E-mail address BBS Name and number Gandalf GloriaLindrud@juno.com Warlock's Castle Warhawk invader3@theonramp.net (588-2024/588-2799) Warhawk is the project coordinator.
